Benton walked through the hall, dodging dancing couples as he searched the room for his "date", for lack of a better term to explain his presence there that evening. He intercepted Jack heading towards Jo Grant with a very seductive smile on his face. Benton rolled his eyes, grabbing him by the arm.
"Jack, what in the world do you think you're doing?" Benton hissed quietly, as he pulled Jack into the next room.
"What? I'm being friendly - I thought that's what you wanted?" Jack said, crossing his arms and staring at Benton.
"No, I believe my exact words were 'don't scare the other officers, and try not to start any wars'! That does not translate into flirting with the Brigadier!" Benton hissed at him, as he turned his head and looked at the Brigadier, who was still reeling from a conversation with Jack, a pink tinge on his cheeks and a confused look on his face.
"Jack, what did you say to him? I think he's gone into shock!" Benton turned back to Jack, his eyebrows raised questioningly. Jack shrugged, turning back to the party.
"I may have suggested something involving me, Yates, himself...and a jar of strawberry jam - surely he didn't take me seriously," under his breath he added, "I hate strawberry jam!"
"Oh Lord!" Benton exclaimed. "You can never contain yourself, can you?" He sighed, rolling his eyes. "Come on then, we better get going before the Brig's brain starts functioning again." Benton said, walking towards the door. Jack sighed, but followed close behind anyway. A smile spread over his face.
"Benton?" Jack asked, in a particularly sing-song tone.
"What would you say if I suggested something involving you, me, Yates and a jar of strawberry jam?" Benton was silent for a moment.
"You can't be serious, Captain." he said sternly, turning and smiling at Jack as he opened the door. "You know I prefer marmalade."
